About Pastor Julie Winklepleck

Called to minister to the people of St. Paul and the community of East Lansing in 2015, I am blessed to have found this vocation and this place to live it out.

I was ordained in 2002 after graduating from Trinity Lutheran Seminary. I also attended the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, and I’m really glad I had both experiences: the ecumenical, which taught me to appreciate how Lutherans fit into the Christian world, and the Lutheran, which formed me in our unique tradition. I was called to serve Immanuel Lutheran Church in Muskegon; in 2011 I became a two-point pastor, also serving St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Norton Shores. During my internship year I served St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lenox Township, Michigan.

My first career was in publishing. I was an editor at Gale Research, in Detroit, a reference book company that we called a haven for liberal arts majors. I graduated from Oakland University with a B.A. in History. During college I worked at the library; I’ve always loved to read. I also enjoy movies and TV, cooking, and water aerobics. I’m really excited about St. Paul’s community garden. I grew up in Brighton, Michigan, on an acre and a half lot, where my dad grew a huge vegetable garden as well as raspberries and tended a dozen apple trees.

I met my spouse, Kathy Griffin, in summer Greek at Trinity. She works for Walmart as an assistant store manager. We have two cats, Fiona and Blue. In 2014, we hosted Max, an exchange student from Germany. Music has been my path to God. I love to sing, and enjoy listening to a wide variety of music, from Beethoven to the Beatles.

Kathy and I were thrilled to meet ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton at her installation in Chicago, in 2013.
